MAIN STAGE, Saturday
The Underground Circus has been on the forefront of artistic circus innovation on the West Coast for the past 15 years. With the structural creations of director Peter Boulanger and the movement creation of director Ninon Parent, The Underground Circus explores the limits of the new age of circus arts.
Momentum is a performance piece created on “Alice”, a 12 ft. tall, 16 ft. wide, 500 lb. rocking stage. The inner curved surface creates a rolling stage, while the artists balance, flip, and work the momentum of the structure and each other.
Peter Boulanger has been creating sculptural elements for movement exploration for 30 years. With a background in gymnastics, dance and theatre, the progression to circus arts was a natural one. Alice was inspired by the work of Diavolo, and Peter’s own experimentation into rocking motion.
Peter Boulanger grew up in Vancouver, developing numerous skills in Gymnastics, Theatre, and Dance. In 1988, Peter moved to Montreal where he had a chance to combine these passions at L’Ecole National du Cirque, Canada’s National Circus School. Touring later with Le Cirque du Soleil, Peter met his wife, finding a creative and romantic relationship and the two travelled and performed around the world doing street theatre at fairs in France, corporate and festival work across North America and performances with 12 different Symphony orchestras.
